Meliae

MELIAE, arum, Gr. Μελίαι, ῶν, eine Art Nymphen, welche die Erde aus denen Blutstropfen hervor brachte, welche Saturn vergoß, als ihm Jupiter die Mannheit nahm. Hesiod. Theog. v. 187. Sie hießen mit ihren besondern Namen Helice, Cynosura, Arethusa, Ide, Krime, Britho. Celäno, Adrastea und Glauce. Tzetz. ad eumd. ap. Gyrald. Synt. V. p. 176. Den Namen haben sie nach einigen von μελία, Eschen, Pomey P. II. p. 180. nach andern aber von dem ebräischen oder phönicischen mlouth, oder dem syrischen maleion, voll, und werden für die Seelen angenommen, die ihre Zeit in den Körpern der Leiber erfüllet. Ceric. ad Hes. l. c. Dagegen wollen andere, daß die Menschen selbst von ihnen entstanden, und solches zwar entweder, weil sie unter den Bäumen, deren eine Art die Eschen sind, geboren, oder doch unter denselben insonderheit weggesetzet worden. Proclus ap. Gyrald. l. c. Wiederum geben andere vor, sie wären selbst nur auf den Gefilden und an wässerichten Orten entstanden. Theophrast. ap. Spanhem. ad Callim Hymn. in Delum v. 80.
