OPHTHALMITIS, ĭdis, Gr. Ὀφθαλμίτις, ιδος, ein Beynamen der Minerva, unter welchem ihr Lykurgus zu Sparta einen Tempel erbauete, da ihm Alkander, dem seine Gesetze gar nicht anstehen wollten, ein Auge mit einem Stechen ausgestoßen hatte. Pausan. Lacon. c. 18. p. 195. Sie hat also den Namen von Ὀφθαλμὸς, ein Auge, und wird sonst von einigen Optilete genannt, Plutarch. in Lycurg. c. 13. welches von Ὄπτεσθαι, sehen, adstammet.
